Viking Dwelling

L'Anse Aux Meadows was the site of Leif Ericsson's Viking outpost over 1000 years ago, the earliest European settlement in North America. They didn't stay more than a couple of decades due to conflicts with the Beothuk Indians, but the remains of their village were still discernable to archeologists. A National Historic Site was set up to preserve the area, and interpret the remains. Before we visited the historic site, we visited Norstead, a new commercial site across the road which imitates a Viking trading post, much as Black Creek Pioneer Village imitates a mid-19th century village in Upper Canada.

We thought it would be worthwhile to visit since we didn't think there would be anything like that at the historic site.

We were wrong. The historic site had also recreated the buildings typical of the Vikings, except their buildings were built from the same types of materials that the Vikings used. One change though was the use of gas for their fires - apparently, they accidentaly lit their peat-huts on fire by burning wood, so, being the government, wood is no longer considered safe for burning. The main attraction to the historic site was seeing the ruins, which were raised humps in the grass in rectangular outlines. It was easy to see that buildings had once stood there.

It was our last day on Newfoundland. We had to drive from L'Anse Aux Meadows to St. Barbe to catch the ferry to Labrador. This time, the ferry was at the wharf, unlike the one in Sydney. Again, the day was foggy and we could not see much from the boat. It would turn out that the previous 2 sunny days would be the only sunny days of our trip in Newfoundland and Labrador!

Labrador

Ann had a problem with motion sickness from the rocking of the boat. Upon arrival in Labrador, we were unable to see much at all due to the fog. We did notice that there was an abundance of snowy patches on the ground.

We had some business to attend to at the ferry terminal. Ross wanted to verify our reservation for the Nordik Express ferry that we were going to take in several days upon departing Labrador.

Lighthouse

Much to our delight, Blanc Sablon, was on Eastern Time, unlike Labrador, which is on Newfoundland time. With one and a half hours difference in our favour and the fact we checked-in early, it meant we would be able to check in the car around 8pm, instead of 5pm like we had thought, giving us more use of our last day.

Ross had booked a BnB in Red Bay, about an hour away from the ferry. We took our time and made a few stops along the way. Since the weather was still poor, we paid to see the museum in the L'Anse Amour lighthouse. It was something to do. After visiting Nova Scotia two years in a row, lighthouses no longer interest us much.

We checked in early to our BnB and immediately headed out to dinner before the local restaurant closed.

Pinware River

Ann was really tired, so she had a really long nap - several hours long. Ross watched the federal debates on TV and downloaded the rest of his email for several hours all while Ann was sleeping.

Reviews
The Apollo This ferry loaded more quickly than ferry to Newfoundland, but it porpoised in flat calm water, making Ann sick.
Oceanside BnB This Red Bay BnB was not that great. The bed was pretty old and uncomfortable, and the room was pretty drab. ($60)
Labrador So far, just fog.
Whaler's Wharf Restaurant This Red Bay restaurant was kind of pricey, but also the only place in town.
